lieby back to philly
It's only for a day but Mike Lieberthal is coming back to retire as a Phillie. This is sweet news. A native of southern California, Lieberthal spent 13 years as a catcher for the Phillies and calls Philadelphia his "second home". He came up through the Phillies farm system and except for the 2007 season, spent with the Dodgers, played his entire career with the Phillies. A two-time All Star, in 1999 he became just the sixth catcher in major league history to hit .300 with 30 homers. The Phillies announced today that Lieberthal will sign a one-day contract for June 1. The game is already sold out. Doug Glanville is the last former Phillie to retire in similar fashion, which he did in 2005.
